FUTUR€ Streets of Galway 2009 - Local Media Coverage
Submitted by seamusc on Wed, 2009-08-12 15:13
The local media has not been "slow out of the traps" in publishing various reports on our recent 8K road-race. Today's Galway Independent has a fantastic colour photograph on the front-page featuring our two sumo-wrestler entrants (well done lads on getting around by the way!), together with a full-page colour photograph spread inside as well as a race-report in the sports section. Tuesday's Connacht Sentinel also had a rear view of our Sumo's and some great photos of the competitors in action. Thursday brings yet more coverage in the ubiquitous Galway Advertiser, who also provided extensive pre-race updates and analysis for the Streets.

Boit and Ryan Take Titles in Style
Submitted by mel on Mon, 2009-08-10 14:50
The 2009 FUTURE Streets of Galway 8k Road Race took place on Saturday evening last from Southpark in the Claddagh. This was the 24th running of the race hosted by Galway City Harriers AC and sponsors FUTURE, and the biggest yet. The race entries sold out in mid-July and on Saturday night over 2000 people took to the streets around the traditional route from Southpark, up Merchant’s Road to Eyre Square, by UCHG and St. Mary’s towards Devon Park, Pearse Stadium, then Leisureland, Seapoint and back in the Prom.
The weather forecast had been good, fine and dry with only light winds, and these were predicted to be at the runners backs on the home stretch along Salthill promenade. Fast times, personal bests and seasons bests, were hoped for by many of the runners who lined up at the start. Chip timing was used again this year, which means that everyone can get an accurate time for their run, regardless of how far back from the start line they are. The chip records the time from the moment you cross the start line to the moment you cross the finish.

Barm Brack & Tea
Submitted by mel on Fri, 2009-08-07 13:13
Barm Brack and tea after the Streets of Galway are a tradition as old as the race itself, and the regulars expect it at this stage! So, make sure you make your way into the Galway Rovers Clubhouse at the race finish area for the post race refreshments and prizegiving.
The Burcos for boiling the water will have been set up from early in the day to make sure there are 2500 cups of tea or coffee as required. There will be other carbohydrate delights alongside the Barm Brack to get you refuelled after the race.
The prizegiving will take place there at 8:30pm, so drop in to give the winners a cheer and meet up will fellow runners.
Outlook: Mostly Fine ... and Fast
Submitted by mel on Fri, 2009-08-07 12:45
The weather outlook is for tomorrow includes some light showers but hopefully these will stay off between 5 and 10pm tomorrow evening. Only light winds are forecast and seem to be in a favourable direction for the Prom home stretch, so PBs and fast times should be on the cards for many.
It will be competitive at the business end of the field. Last year's winner Josphat Boit, fresh from winning the National Senior T&F 10,000m title just last weekend, will be back to defend his title.
