Gary Thornton had a superb run in Athenry today. The time on the clock was 29:57 when he crossed the line - I'm not sure if this is the official time but Athenry will have the official results up soon. The GCH men's team of Gary, Rob Staunton, Eamonn Hornibrook and Ian Egan combined to take the team prize from Craughwell AC. Many other club members had good runs and some good times were recorded. Athenry AC organised a perfect day and a great race - we'll have photos and full results in the coming days.
News for senior members and athletes
From today's Irish Independent:
Running can help boost your brain power and help you overcome a forgetful memory, a Cambridge University study has suggested.
Jogging a couple of days a week was shown to stimulate the brain, which led to a big impact on mental ability, university neuroscientists discovered.
Galway City Harrier athletes had a bright start to the indoor season this weekend.
All-Ireland Junior indoors:
Eanna O'Cathain had a double winning performance. He won the 35lb for distance with a throw of 8m.30cm and finished 2nd in the shot with a throw of 13m.33cm.
Keith Fallon had a great indoor personal best of 2min 01.4 seconds in the 800m to claim silver. Keith who will not turn 17 until April has two more years to compete as a junior.

Mallow AC have decided to cancel Sunday's race due to the continuing bad weather. The following is what I received from them
"Unfortunately we have had to cancel Sunday's race. We ran the course today and while most (95%) of the road is dry, there are a few patches of ice which hadn't cleared by late afternoon today. We could not be certain of the safety of all runners
Based on the forecast it is unlikely that things would have got better before Sunday. We were keen to avoid the situation of four years ago where the race was cancelled on the start-line due to safety concerns
The following message has just been issued by the County Board Chairman, Brendan Monaghan:
"I am sorry to report that on safety grounds the Galway County Indoors scheduled to take place on Saturday next 9th Jan 2010 has been cancelled. I would like to thank everybody who replied to e-mails and the very helpful advice I received from a number of clubs and officials before we made the final decision today.
Both GCH Track sessions - Juveniles and Seniors have been cancelled this evening, Wednesday 6th January, and the track is closed due to the icy conditions.
For Seniors, normal track sessions will resume next Wednesday 13th(hopefully). Warm up 5.30 and session proper 5.45 to 6.45 . All welcome regardless of running pace or lack thereof after this particularly bad spell for training!
