Outlook: Mostly Fine ... and Fast

cloudyThe weather outlook is for tomorrow includes some light showers but hopefully these will stay off between 5 and 10pm tomorrow evening. Only light winds are forecast and seem to be in a favourable direction for the Prom home stretch, so PBs and fast times should be on the cards for many.

It will be competitive at the business end of the field. Last year's winner Josphat Boit, fresh from winning the National Senior T&F 10,000m title just last weekend, will be back to defend his title. GCH's own Gerry Ryan wasn't far behind him in the Phoenix Park two weeks ago and will give him a good race tomorrow.

Raheny Shamorocks AC have a number of strong contenders entered, including Cillian O'Leary, Brian Farrell and Mark Kirwan in the men's race as well as Maurice Kimmins in the Vets and Catriona Hooper in the Womens races.

Rosemary Ryam, last year's popular Streets winner, is back again this year to defend her crown and hopefully challenge her own course record of 26.01, which she set back in 2001. She too is in great form, shoowing her spped at the shorter 5000m distance when winning silver in the women's 5000m at the National T&F last weekend. The local women Regina Casey of GCH and Caroline Clancy of Loughrea will be hoping for good runs. Caroline did very well at the National T&F last weekend, in a very competitive 1500m. That race was won by Wicklow's Deirdre Byrne with Roisin Mc Gettigan in 3rd, both of whom are going to the World Championships in Berlin next week.

The Junior category is open to athletes aged under 19 on the day of the race. The minimum age an athlete must be is age 14. Famous past Junior winners of the race include GCH’s own Gary Thornton, who later went on to win a National Senior 10,000m title. Tonight a number of local athletes will be looking for good runs. Nicola O’Ceallaigh, Irene Gorman, Keith Fallon, John Gillane, Jack Larkin, Adrian Hardiman are all great competitors and we wish them the best of luck tonight. There are also a good few Junior entrants this evening from the Ballinasloe and District Athletic Club.

The majority of the competitors, over 1700 people, are from Galway city and county. Local athletic clubs will be well represented with entrants from the clubs of Athenry, Ballinasloe, Clare River Harriers, Craughwell, Tuam, Loughrea and Mayo as well as the clubs of Co. Clare. Over 400 entrants come to the Streets this year via the Athletics Ireland Fit For Life Programme, a popular initiative to get people out running, which is now in it’s second year. Many local charities also have teams entered who will be running as well as raising money for their cause.

Athenry AC have a large entry in tonight’s race – 81 people in total. Among them is Mick Rice, who rumour has it is running a 100 mile race next weekend in Connemara. Elaine Walsh is here from Athenry AC, as is Jane-Ann Healy who will be competing for the women's prizes.

There are 17 entrants from Tuam AC and 54 from Craughwell AC. There are also 10 entrants from Sligo Athletic Club and 13 from Mayo AC.

We also welcome two Basques to the race. Izaskun Gaztelumendi and Joxemari are here from northern Spain near the City of Orio. Izaskum ran the Streets in 2006 also and is aiming to beat her time here tomorrow.

There are entrants from Toulouse in France, from the Club d’Athletiscme Balmanais, from Rome and Atletica Villa Aurelia Roma. John Fosmolen comes here from the Netherlands.
We have the Doherty’s from Osterville Massachusetts and Hiscocks the from Montgomery County Road Runners. We also welcome Mary Beth Glaccum from the Jersey Shore Running Club in New Jersey. And Brian Thomas Griffin from the L Street Running Club in Boston. John Guckian runs with Namban Rengo in Tokyo.

Also here is Ken Horan from Kilcolgan. Back in April, Ken regained his World Kickboxing Network (WKN) Middleweight Title from Szymon Was of Poland. He had only briefly lost his title to the Pole.

The last person to gain entry to the Streets this year was Vincent Mulvey, a Cavanman. There is a well known runner from Raheny called Vinny Mulvey, but this is a different Vincent Mulvey.

Good luck to everybody in the Streets!
