Golds for Gary and Mindaugas at National T&F Championships

Gary Thornton, G.C.H., won the Men's 10000m final at the National Track and Field Championships held at Morton Stadium Santry at the weekend. This is Gary's first senior national track title and he led from the gun to record an impressive win with a time of 29:57.06. Clubmate Michael O'Connor was 3rd in the same event.

There was gold also for Mindaugas Kurcenkovas, G.C.H., who won the Javelin with his 4th throw of 58.56.

Sean Breathnach competed in the complete set of 5 throwing events - Shot Putt, Discus, Javelin, 56lb Distance and 56lb Height. He came away with 2 medals - silver in the Shot with 15:08 and 3rd in the 56lb Distance with 7.70.

There was a good performance also by Gemma Hynes who was 4th in the Women's 200m with a fine time of 24.82. This event was won by Joanne Cuddihy of Kilkenny. Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh and Igor Muntean also competed with distinction to make this the best national championships for G.C.H. athletes in many years.

Indeed it was a great weekend for all the Galway athletes. Paul Hession, Athenry A.C., was in superb form yet again. He won the 200m on Saturday with a new National Record 20.30, and the 100m on Sunday with a fantastic 10.45 in difficult conditions. Ann Loughnane, Craughwell A.C., won the Women's 5000m Walk in a time of 24:36.30.
