Top Class Action Anticipated as Streets Attracts Biggest Ever Field
A top class race is anticipated at the FUTURE Streets of Galway 8k which takes place this Saturday 11th August at 7:30pm, starting and finishing at Southpark in the Claddagh. The race has continued to grow in popularity over the years and this year will be the biggest yet.
At the elite end of the field Gary Thornton, recent National Senior 10,000m Track & Field champion will be hoping to continue his excellent season with a good performance in his home town. Gerry Ryan also of G.C.H. and winner of the recent Adidas Irish Runner 5 mile in the Phoenix Park will be there, as will Michael O’Connor who claimed bronze in the National Senior 10,000m. Kilkenny’s Brian Maher and Raheny’s Richie Yeates are expected to be strong challengers.
In the women’s race Rosemary Ryan, Bilboa, who holds the course record of 26.01 from 2001, will compete. Rosemary represented Ireland in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and will be hoping to compete in Beijing in 2008. She also recently won the Adidas 5 mile race. Pauline Curley, Tullamore, winner in 2000, 2002 and 2003 and second last year, will also be there. Veronica Colleran, Ennis Track Club, winner of the recent Clare 10k is also entered. The local challenge will be led by Regina Casey, G.C.H., and Jane Anne Healy, Naas AC, who lives and works locally and finished in the top 10 last year.
There are over 2000 people entered, which will make it one of the largest road races in Ireland this year. Most of the entrants are from Galway city and county but the race also has an international appeal with the U.S., U.K, Italy, and Australia all represented. The large numbers expected reflects the increased popularity of the sport of road running in recent years as well as the attractive fast flat course and strong competition for those chasing a Personal Best time. The race will take in many of the city’s landmarks from its base in Southpark, passing Merchant’s Road, Eyre Square, Brown Thomas, the Cathedral, NUIG, UCHG, Cooke’s Corner, Pearse Stadium, Leisureland and the Prom.
Participants are advised to arrive in plenty of time for the start as traffic and parking restrictions will be in place and to cooperate with the race marshals and Gardai to ensure safety and enjoyment for all. No entries will be taken on the night. The results will be available within a few days of the race on this website.
