Brendan Glynn's Running Shorts

1. How long (in years!) have you been running regularly?
I started in 1995 so almost 15 years, but was inactive and got fat from 2001 until last year.
2. Why did you start running?
I always loved sport when I was younger, unfortunately due to an injury to my arm I was unable to compete at contact sports, so I took up running, anyone who runs for a period of time can’t help but fall in love with the sport.
3. What inspires you to keep on running?
So many reasons but most of all it makes me happy and as someone who has “come back” to the sport, I can safely say I wasn’t really happy for the years I spent away.
4. What is the best piece of running advice you can offer?
Recovery is key!!! Don’t overdo training sessions or you’ll leave it all on the track. PJ tried to drill that into me when I was young and knew everything, now that I’m a bit older and know nothing, I’m finally listening.
5. What motivates you to run in bad weather?
None needed, I just take that step out the door, that’s what it’s all about really.
6. What make/model of running shoes do you normally train in?
ASICS, always.
7. How many miles did you run last week?
I don’t really train like that, but if you convert my sessions to miles about 45.
8. What is your favourite racing distance?
600m!!! but there are only rare opportunities to race 600m so as a conventional distance, 800m.
9. What is you favourite training location?
The track in Dangan on a sunny calm day.
10. What is your favourite piece of running gear?
Winter = Garmin, summer = my track spikes.
11. What is your favourite pre-race food/drink?
Bowl of porridge if local, cereal bars if away.
12. What is your favourite post-race food/drink?
Chocolate milk for recovery and there is kind of an unwritten rule for running that after a big race you’re allowed to eat what you like so some chips and steak, chicken, chocolate and sweets, etc.
13. How much money did you spend on your last pair of running shoes?
€105 nike maxcat 2 spikes.
14. In ten years time will you still be running?
If I am able! Love to compete, but will always do for health and fitness, I was over 16 stone last year before I returned and I never want to be like that again.
15. Have you ever been bitten by a dog while running?
Yes, didn’t break skin thankfully, it’s always the small ones too.
16. What is your most embarrassing running-related moment?
Can’t say I have any, I would have gotten embarrassed when I was young finishing poorly in races but now even at nationals when I was 100m behind David Campbell, it wasn’t embarrassment going through my mind but rather I love this, I’m here and I’m competing against David Campbell!
17. Who would you nominate for an Irish Athletics Hall of Fame, and why?
John Joe Barry, the "Ballincurry Hare", who should have been the first man under 4 minutes for the mile.
18. What other sports do you participate in besides running?
I did karate for years and kick-boxing for a while too. I just run now though.
19. What is your best ever running performance?
1998 Indoor All Irelands 800m when I was 14. I was sick all week of the race but ran out of my skin to finish 3rd by 0.2 of a second ahead of my team mate and training partner Killian.
20. What is your worst ever running performance?
The indoor all Irelands U17 800m in 2000. If I ran for a medal I would have gotten silver, instead I went for gold not knowing how much Liam Reale had improved. I ran 1st 400m faster than David Gillick ran final of 400m that year, completely blew up and finished 4th.
21. What is the strangest thing you have seen while out on a training run?
A bunch of students around a fire drinking cans of Bulmers while nude. Chilly!

Thanks guys.
Alan you have the scariest finish I've ever seen, hard to believe you're not an 800m runner! I still don't know how I beat you last time, I suspect it was bad tatics on your part more than anything else. Looking forward to having it out with you over last 100m next time!
