1. How long (in years!) have you been running regularly?
Nearly a year following a long break. Before that, close to twenty years on and off.
2. Why did you start running?
To keep fit and I love being out in the great outdoors.
3. What inspires you to keep on running?
The fresh air (what's left of it) and to keep away from the dreaded nicotine. Watching athletics/races on TV is a great motivation.
4. What is the best piece of running advice you can offer?
Quality not quantity – sometimes less is best (especially as the years catch up).
5. What motivates you to run in bad weather?
A kick up the behind! I once used to run in all weathers. Now I sometimes open the front door and race back indoors straight away.
6. What make/model of running shoes do you normally train in?
NIKE-Air Pegasus-Bowerman series.
7. How many miles did you run last week?
15 miles approximately (my third week back training since November).
8. What is your favourite racing distance?
It has to be the marathon. I compare myself to an old racehorse – I can keep plodding on forever at a snail's pace.
9. What is you favourite training location?
Though I haven’t been there recently, it has to be the racecourse in Ballybrit (I omit the fences!)
10. What is your favourite piece of running gear?
My GCH singlet.
11. What is your favourite pre-race food/drink?
Tea, porridge, bananas and Lucozade sport.
12. What is your favourite post-race food/drink?
Anything!
13. How much money did you spend on your last pair of running shoes?
$75.
14. In ten years time will you still be running?
All going well, I hope so.
15. Have you ever been bitten by a dog while running?
No but I've had a sock and my running tights bitten. I growl back now.
16. What is your most embarrassing running-related moment?
It has to be when I fell over a three-legged dog many years ago while out running with my sister. She was very concerned – for the dog!
17. Who would you nominate for an Irish Athletics Hall of Fame, and why?
There are many – but John Treacy gets my vote for his gutsy silver medal performance in 1984 marathon in Los Angeles. I watched every minute of it.
18. What other sports do you participate in besides running?
None. I just walk a lot.
19. What is your best ever running performance?
Getting to the start-line and making it over the finish-line does it for me.
20. What is your worst ever running performance?
I did drop out of two (that I can remember) cross-country races many years ago. Literally a sinking feeling!
21. What is the strangest thing you have seen while out on a training run?
Nothing strange – normally see a few youngsters with some beer in the local field while I'm out running (of course I’ve never been tempted to ask for a can!).
