Paul Fallon's Running Shorts

1. How long (in years!) have you been running regularly?
Well, regularly, about 2-3 years. I ran a hell of a lot though when I was a teenager, sometimes hitting 70 miles+/week. As a result of this I spent most of my 20s & 30s recovering!
2. Why did you start running?
Because I couldn’t play soccer (actually I couldn’t run very well either as a kid, which shows how bad I was at soccer). Also, to copy my big brother.
3. What inspires you to keep on running?
To keep one step ahead of Father Time.
4. What is the best piece of running advice you can offer?
Hard/Easy.
5. What motivates you to run in bad weather?
It’s way too hard to start from scratch all over again.
6. What make/model of running shoes do you normally train in?
TBH, I’m not all that concerned, as long as they fit properly!
7. How many miles did you run last week?
58.
8. What is your favourite racing distance?
Hmmm, yet TBD, but if I had to pick one, I’d say somewhere between an 800m and the marathon.
9. What is you favourite training location?
Dangan track on a warm summer evening, or Tonabrocky on a sunny Sunday morning.
10. What is your favourite piece of running gear?
My shorts!
11. What is your favourite pre-race food/drink?
Water.
12. What is your favourite post-race food/drink?
Water and bananas.
13. How much money did you spend on your last pair of running shoes?
€60 (reduced from €105).
14. In ten years time will you still be running?
If I am alive, I'll still be running.
15. Have you ever been bitten by a dog while running?
He tried...
16. What is your most embarrassing running-related moment?
Nothing really embarrassing as such, maybe running into a barbed wire fence on the racecourse, but that was more sore than embarrassing as there was nobody there to witness it.
17. Who would you nominate for an Irish Athletics Hall of Fame, and why?
Bernie Kelly, because she inspires so many to get out there and just do it.
18. What other sports do you participate in besides running?
Don’t have much of a chance to do much else, but when I can, tennis, soccer and swimming.
19. What is your best ever running performance?
Dunmore 9.5 mile race back in the 1980s comes to mind. Not sure where I finished exactly but I ran about 54 minutes for it and beat a few "good guys" along the way.
20. What is your worst ever running performance?
Having to drop out of the all-Ireland Junior X-Country. I had finished 42nd the previous year and had high hopes of getting near the top 12 and making the national squad.
21. What is the strangest thing you have seen while out on a training run?
A couple of ‘oul wans’ getting it on in Fahy’s Field in Mervue - although thinking back, they may have been younger than I am now!
