[acidfree:8307 align=right size=275 title=""]Gerry Carty reports from the heart of the action at the Great Ireland Run and national 10k last weekend, which saw the fastest 10k time ever on Irish roads - and a few inspired GCHers too.

GCH were well represented at the national 10km which was held in conjunction with the Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix park on Sunday last. The motorway to Dublin makes this a race which is easily doable as a day trip and an enjoyable day trip for most.

The day was still, dry and cool, ideal conditions for racing. The Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix Park seems to have become the home for the National 10km and from the men's point of view the consensus is that it works well. You get to start at the head of a big field, warm up until a few minutes before the start and are always running with company. I think for the women's AAI event it might not be as attractive as it's a small field that gets quite strung out.

The course has remained the same over the past few years. A fast first 5km, finished off by the steep descent down the 'Kyber Pass'. The second 5km are mostly uphill and take back some of the early gains. Much of the course is lined with support which always seems to make you run that bit faster.

Kenenisa Bekele ran the fastest 10km ever run on Irish roads and it seems to have inspired a number of our athletes to run the fastest 10kms they've ever run. Chris McGrath, Billy King and Sean Hanley all ran PB's, there may be others I haven't heard of.

The ever improving Gearoid Hynes also ran a fine race to set a new PB of 34.20...taking a massive chunk of his old 35.43 time he set only 4mths beforehand. Am sure it wont be long more till he dips under 34mins-especially on a faster flatter course-Well done!

The Master Mens 40+ team won bronze Gerry Carty, Sean Hanley and Paul Fallon. Well done guys
