Leevale Track Open - GCH Success

The outdoor track season is finally upon us. A few GCH athletes decided to have their opening race at the Leevale track open today at Cork IT. It was a wet, hail stone, sunny and windy day all rolled into one. The wind made for difficult running being measured at +3.6 at one stage. This did not deter our athletes who came away with prizes and pbs.

First up was Caoimhe Daniels in the 800m. Caoimhe had a solid first race running a pb of 2.28.73. I suspect this pb will only last until she runs 800m again. Brendan Glynn ran in the men's 800m.

Keith Fallon was in a very competitive field in the Junior mens 1500m. Sean Tobin from Clonmel was attempting to achieve the World qualifying junior standard of 3.48 in this race. Sean was an impressive winner running 3.51.06. Keith was tucked in nicely with the chasing pack. With one lap to go Cullen Lynch of Togeher AC made a move, Keith easily covered this move and outsprinted Cullen to win 2nd in 4.08.32. Keith barely broke a sweat and we all look forward to seeing what he can achieve this summer.

Nicola O Ceallaigh was in action over 3000m. Irish indoor champion at 3000m Eimear O'Brien from Sligo proved too strong for Nicola on this occasion but Nicola ran a very tactically astute race to take silver in 10.48.48.

The O'Rourke brothers Conor and Iarlaith were giving the blue ribbon event the mile a try. Conor looked strong and finished like a steam train to run a pb of 4.46.02. Iarlaith made massive improvements to run pb of 5.06.01. These brothers are coming on in leap and bounds, I'd love to know what Mrs O'Rourke is feeding them!

It was a good day out for GCH athletes. GCH seniors are becoming more active on a competitive stage, soon athletes will be looking around at start lines for red & white singlet's to see who they have to watch out for.

well done!
