Weekend Cross-Country News
By all accounts yesterday's National Intermediate and Master's Cross Country was a tough muddy affair, but it turned out to be a good day for the Galway girls. The Intermediate winner was Loughrea A.C.'s Laura Shaughnessy, who won convincingly. GCH's Irene Gorman produced a fine run to finish 6th. Loughrea's A.C.'s Caroline Whiriskey was 11th with GCH's Nicola O'Ceallaigh coming in 15th and Caoimhe Daniels completing the GCH team. In the Intermediate men's race, GCH had a full team complement of 4 athletes, and were led home by Chris McGrath, followed by Brian Bruton, Brian O'Connor and Richard Farnan for 7th club team overall.
The Masters men's race had the biggest field and Fintan Hyland was first of the GCH runners and 22nd overall. Gerry Carty and Michael O'Sullivan also had good runs, but it was Martin McEvilly who excelled in the conditions, winning the M60 category and finishing in the top quarter of the field. In the Master's women, GCH had Carmel Brannigan, Bernie Kelly and Margaret Sheridan, Phyllis Browne and Mary Doyle all compete, with Carmel leading them in with a top 50 finish.
